Robert Gschwantner - airPORTUS
Arco, Palazzo dei Panni
22th May – 4th September 2011
Robert Gschwantner (Steyr, 1968) maintains the structure of pictorial representation, while basing his works on the juxtaposition of tiny plastic tubes with oil paint running through them, substituting the traditional brushstroke. Landscapes and architectural images spread across through the space, constructing the reflection of an apparently blurred and changing image in a constant flow of overlapping perceptions, in which depth seems to be a variable value. The backgrounds feature colours or patterns that underline the images’ constant state of mutability: there is no single image but only one in continuous evolution, evoking a sense of immaterial texture. The form that Gschwantner constantly presents in his images of nature reflects his ongoing observation and critique of ecological themes and environmental impact.
Sara Maino
Arco, Casa Collini
10th July – 21th August 2011
On the occasion of the Free-Climbing Festival, the video installation "tempora et auris" by Sara Maino (Arco, 1970) is inspired by the stratification of acoustic memories, expressed by the symbolic places of Bosco Caproni in Arco: the cliff face, dedicated to climbing, of the former oolitic limestone quarries, used for extraction of the stone from the mid-19th century up to the second half of the 20th century. The sounds that may be heard in the installation identify three eras: the time when the place was an ancient seabed; the modern age, in which the place was exploited for quarrying stone; and the contemporary age, in which the sound of miners’ pickaxes has been replaced by that of the tools of climbers, who use the space as a rocky training ground.
Federico Pietrella
Arco, Palazzo dei Panni
11th September 2011 – 15 January 2012
The great monochrome landscapes or the fleeting figures that seem to come out of the walls painted by Federico Pietrella (Rome, 1973) are the upshot of an original combination of painting and photography: a form of expression that the artist has been experimenting with since the end of the ‘90s. Since then his style has shifted towards more material and expressionistic forms, highlighting on one hand his taste for the mimetic transcription of reality, but above all showing a sensitive capacity to make use of time and the continuity of action in the construction of the image and its expression through painting. His works bear all the key characteristics of his artistic development: the relationship with time, the illusionary dimension, the ever original use of simple tools and materials.
